I once heard a priest (notoriously the hardest on suicides) say that God gave you life as a gift. And just like any other gift, you don't have to take it. It's between you and the gift-giver, no one else. I know those are the extremists, not the moderates. I'm just making the connection between those loudest voices and the hypocrisy of their demands. The true Christians, as I understand Christianity, are not so arrogant as to believe that everyone must submit to their views and beliefs, and accept that when someone says "Happy Holidays" to them, that they do so in a spirit of love and acceptance, and welcome it rather than ridicule it.Fortune Cookieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17336291956469689578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4792207845636822371.post-40681481177413177132015-11-29T02:38:20.956-05:002015-11-29T02:38:20.956-05:00This makes me terribly sad. Please don't think that every person who wants to use the term "Merry Christmas" is a Christian. They were obviously not acting in that spirit. But the sadder thing is how you view these people as representative of Christians at Christmas. Although I'm not a credentialed religious scholar, I am a religious thinker, well versed in comparative religion.

You are right that science and religion aren't the same; but your understanding of the differences is dead wrong.

The diagram at the top of your post juxtaposes a (mostly)correct description of the scientific method with a deliberately incorrect parody of religious epistemology.

Such material is emblematic of the closed-minded anti-religious bigotry that pervades the web these days; fortunately, most of the scientists I've had the privilege of working with realize this, and won't bother to give such obvious provocations the time of day.

Science does follow an inductive epistemology. Religion, on the other hand, is too complex and varied to characterize in such a simple manner. Some religions use induction as well, whereas others use primarily deductive reasoning; some use a combined approach, and others eschew true knowledge in principle.

Science and religion both make mistakes, but they also both evolve; no one today believes that the world is flat simply because the medieval church said so - not even Catholics.

Furthermore, it is not true that religion refuses to acknowledge the possibility of external knowledge; the Bible, for example, admits that not everything that Jesus did was written down.

I'm not familiar with any religion that dictates that one not seek answers outside of their particular religious text; although I don't doubt that they exist, I do highly doubt that there are "many" of them.

By the way, although there are some who use the "Science says so, it must be true" argument, I find that in the main they tend to be activists in support of some cause or other, not scientists.

4verageJo3https://www.blogger.com/profile/08012486411258768407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4792207845636822371.post-89451745511523504532013-10-01T14:06:38.038-04:002013-10-01T14:06:38.038-04:00Just this morning, I went down to my basement and ...Just this morning, I went down to my basement and found it full of stuff. Wearing a gay pride shirt on gay pride day would not negate your support in that manner, so why the stand on this? Why is it a one vs the other? Personally, I don't like the actual flag used as clothing, but I wear say, a red shirt and a blue cap or whatever. It's a celebration of exactly what you practice, not entry into a "club".
